“It will come about at that time that I will search Jerusalem with lamps, and I will punish the men who are stagnant in spirit, who say in their hearts, ‘The Lord will not do good or evil!'” Zephaniah 1:12
Zephaniah is very interesting. He lived during the reign of Josiah, which was the beginning of the end for Judah; and what he had to say was quite dismal. He starts by saying “I will completely remove all things from the face of the earth!”. ALL Things!!! No doubt, he was seeing far into the future and the end of time.
But he also proclaimed the Judgement to come against Judah. Notice with me in Today’s Verse, who that included; those “stagnant in spirit” and “say in their hearts, ‘The Lord will not do good or evil!'”. Not necessarily the most Wicked, but still, those who were not entirely committed to the Lord God. This reminds me of those in the Church of Laodicea; those that were “neither cold nor hot” and were “lukewarm”. Like those in Zephaniah’s time, these Wishy Washy professors come under God’s Wrath too!
And so, a great reminder to each of us and how we Live Out what we profess. Notice God says He “will search Jerusalem with lamps”. An indication that He is Actively looking and watching us each day. May God remove from each of us a Stagnant Spirit!!!
