“For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.” Romans 1:16
If you have read through the book of Romans, then you will be familiar with this verse. Paul has just spent the first 15 Verses with his Introduction and then says how eager he is “to preach the gospel to you also who are in Rome”. He then begins with Today’s Verse in explaining what “The Gospel” is and continues on for some time. “How long” he continues is the subject of debate among commentators, which I won’t go into here. I would prefer to just reflect on that phrase “the power of God for salvation”.
So, here are my thoughts: Salvation! Salvation from what? From God’s Wrath! Both now, and in the Eternal Life to come. The Power of God! God has a Remedy and a Solution to this Dilemma, which is so Radical in nature, Paul uses this phrase to describe it! He also uses the Greek word Dynamis for Power, which is where we get the English word for Dynamite. And what is that “Power of God”? The Gospel! IT,…and it ALONE, is the Remedy and Solution to Mankind’s Dilemma. So then, the Question becomes, “How Important is this Gospel”? EXTREMELY! More than Life and Death; it involves Eternal Ramifications. Want to know more? Read the Book of Romans as Paul unfolds what “The Gospel” is!
