Read Psalm 36-40

“Delight yourself in the Lord; and He will give you the desires of your heart.” Psalm 37:4

At first sight, this verse seems to be a blank check for self indulgence; that if I do such and such, then I will get whatever I ask for. But consider the 1st half and how it defines the 2nd. We are to “Delight ourselves in the Lord”. This implies 2 things:

1. We no longer have a Love or Affinity for the things that rival God and His supremacy. The “Lord” becomes Preeminent!

2. We actually have a Joy and Delight in doing the things God commands. Not one of Drudgery and Duty!

This also changes what the “desires” of our hearts are. Before we delighted in the Lord, our “desires” were worldly and selfish. Now, they are God Centered and preoccupied with His Glory.
