“My God, my God, why have You forsaken me?” Psalm 22:1
Each time I read through this Psalm, and other passages like it, I try to picture what the writer was going through. We’ve read earlier in the year where David suffered immense persecution by both King Saul and his son Absalom! Much of what is recorded about his life and reign were written while he was being persecuted. Today’s Verse can be viewed as a Summary of those moments. I’m sure there were many times when he asked God this very Question.
But God had a Purpose! God had a Plan! David would have a distant Ancestor who during His time of intense suffering and persecution would quote this very Verse! He would be called “the Son of David” and would fulfill this Psalm, Isaiah 53, and many other passages. He truly would be forsaken by God as He who knew no Sin became Sin for us!
Thank God that David suffered and wrote these words; but even more, thank God for the One who fulfilled them so we would not have to!!!
