Read Proverbs 10

“When there are many words, transgression is unavoidable, but he who restrains his lips is wise.” Proverbs 10:19

It’s amazing how many of the Proverbs address our speech. Just in this Chapter alone there are 12 direct references to our lips and tongues! Today’s Verse always haunts me when I talk with others. I was struck afresh by it this morning, along with, “but a babbling fool will be ruined”, not once, but twice! Ouch!!!

But isn’t this at the root of what James says? In Chapter 1 he reproves us with “If anyone…does not bridle his tongue” and then finishes us off in Chapter 3. Now granted, much of what he says is geared toward “what” is said and not “how much”. But the admonition is clear, “everyone must be quick to hear, slow to speak”! I AM Guilty! Oh God, give us more Grace!
