“Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it.” Matthew 7:13
With Today’s Verse, Jesus begins His closing thoughts to the Sermon on the Mount. As I have mentioned earlier, He is speaking to His Disciples. After everything He has told them, He now Admonishes them, “Enter through the narrow gate”. He then goes on to explain; “the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it”. He also gives them this Warning Contrast; “the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it.”
Now a final Question; what is this Wide Gate and Broad Way? Is this “The World”? Is Jesus concerned that the Disciples would abandon His teaching and join the multitudes going to Hell? I don’t think so. Consider “the Many” in Verse 22 who “prophecy”, “cast out demons”, and “do many miracles”. These don’t sound like Lost Pagans to me. I believe Jesus is warning them about a True Christianity and a False One to come.
And this Warning isn’t to just those 1st Century Disciples; it is to us as well! We need to ask ourselves afresh today, “Did I go through the Narrow Gate” and ” Am I still on the Narrow Way”? How will you know? Jesus said “he who does the will of My Father”!!!
