“Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it.” Matthew 7:13
With this Verse, Jesus begins His closing thoughts to the Sermon on the Mount. As mentioned earlier, He is speaking to His Disciples. After everything He has told them, He now Admonishes them, “Enter through the narrow gate”. He then goes on to explain; “the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it”. He also gives them a Warning Contrast; “the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it.”
Now a final Question; what is this Wide Gate and Broad Way? Is this “The World”? Is Jesus concerned that the Disciples would abandon His teaching and join the multitudes going to Hell? I don’t think so. Consider “the Many” in Verse 22 who “prophecy”, “cast out demons”, and “do many miracles”. These don’t sound like Lost Pagans to me. I believe Jesus is warning them about a True Christianity and a False One to come.
And this Warning isn’t to just those 1st Century Disciples; it is to us as well! We need to ask ourselves afresh today, “Did I go through the Narrow Gate” and ” Am I still on the Narrow Way”? How will you know? Jesus said “he who does the will of My Father”!!!
