“Why do you call Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?” Luke 6:46
As you read through the Gospels, one thing that strikes you is how similar, and yet different, the stories are that they contain. Some are very much alike, almost verbatim! Others, like this one, are in many ways different. Most are familiar with Matthew 5-7; we call it “the Sermon on the Mount”. It is called that because we’re told in 5:1 that Jesus “went up on the mountain”. However, here in Luke we’re told in 6:17 that Jesus “stood on a level place”; many call this “the Sermon on the Plain”. In Matthew, he elaborates on this section. He describes these, as those that expect to Enter the Kingdom, but are turned away. Here in Luke, he fails to provide anything more than Today’s Verse.
Whether or not it is the same Sermon, from 2 different perspectives, or 2 entirely different Sermons, the importance is to embrace them both and learn from them. The Holy Spirit has used both Matthew and Luke to write “exactly” what He wanted communicated. They were Inspired to write “what” God has said! That is what is meant when we say that the Bible is “God Breathed”.
When we do “pick up and read” our Bibles each day, it is good to have this in the forefront of our thinking; that “GOD” has authored this Book and He “will” speak to us if we take time to Listen!
