“I have made a covenant with my eyes; How then could I gaze at a virgin? Job 31:1
As I mentioned yesterday, we are in the midst of an “Interlude”. This takes place from Chapters 26 to 31 and has only Job speaking. Like a Debate, we’ve had each Speaker present his Argument, his Rebuttal, and his Closing Statement. In these last 3 Chapters, Job is summarizing his Final Thoughts. As he recounts once again the Argument of his Personal Integrity, he makes this very revealing statement in Today’s Verse!
In the Book of 1st John we are told, “Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him”. In describing to his readers what “Loving the World” means, he uses the phrase “the lust of the eyes”. If we take John’s Admonition and incorporate it into Job’s Time; in an effort to avoid this Pitfall, Job says he has “made a covenant with my eyes”. And, in Job’s case (as is in most men), he describes this as Gazing at Women.
But we can’t limit it to just that! This would include “Anything” that he could “lust” after with his eyes. Job was so committed to living Uprightly, that he made a “Covenant”, a Solemn Vow before God, with his eyes!!!
What an example to us of godly living!
