“But this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days,” declares the Lord, “I will put My law within them and on their heart I will write it; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.” Hebrews 8:10
As I mentioned in my Introductory Notes, Hebrews was written as a “warning” to those tempted to leave “The Faith”. It is filled with Many References to the Old Covenant, or more accurately, The “OLD” Covenant. He does this by Comparing the two and showing how much better (As in Saving the Soul) the “NEW” is over the Old. That is where Today’s Verse plays such a Major Part. As we consider what the Author (who quotes Jeremiah) is saying, consider the Antithesis of this Verse. The OLD Covenant “Did Not” write the Law upon their heart, and hence, did not necessarily make the Jews “God’s People”. But the NEW Covenant…DOES!!!
If you are not familiar with Hebrews, this is one of the Main Points of the whole Book. The writer contrasts the Old and New Covenants using this Verse from Jeremiah 31. The gist of his point is this: The Law (The Old Covenant) cannot save, it can only condemn, but Grace (The New Covenant) changes the Heart. First, it forgives our Sin, and Second, it gives us a New Heart. Because we are still Sinners, we fail; but Christ forgives us. Because we have a New Heart, we get back up and keep walking obediently. Do you have a New Covenant Heart? If so, God’s Law has been written on it with a desire to keep it!
