“How long, O Lord, will I call for help, and You will not hear?” Habakkuk 1:2a
Habakkuk is a short Book (3 Chapters), but full of riches if you take time to mine it. Here, in the very beginning, he cries out to God in what sets the theme for the whole Book. In Verse 1, were told that this is “The oracle which Habakkuk the prophet saw”. Not heard, saw! In Verse 3 he cries, “Why do You make me see iniquity, and cause me to look on wickedness?” Add to this, today’s Verse, and you have a good picture of what to expect. Take time to read Habakkuk soon and you’ll see what I mean.
But in this verse, you have a burden expressed that many of us have today. Do you ever feel like this? Do you have that sense of despair that Habakkuk felt? Our unsaved children or loved ones? Our work or school situations? Maybe our Church or our Government? We cry out to God daily, weekly, monthly, yearly, and we feel that He doesn’t hear.
Well, Jesus gives us an Antidote to this spirit of Anxiety. He tells us of a Man asking a Neighbor for bread and a Widow pleading with a Judge for justice. We’re told that He told us these stories “that at all times they ought to pray and not to lose heart”. May His Words help us fight Habakkuk’s Despair!
