“Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father:” Galatians 1:4
We have now reached Paul’s Letter to the Churches of Galatia in our Through the Bible reading. Many consider this Paul’s first Letter written to the Churches that comprised the fruit of his first Missionary Journey. What we see very early on in this Epistle is Paul’s concern for their Spiritual Welfare. You see, they were flirting with Apostasy where in Verse 6 he would state “I am amazed that you are so quickly deserting Him who called you by the grace of Christ, for a different gospel”. So with this Burden, consider Today’s Verse with a Simple Question to help steer a clear course through the Book.
Why did Jesus come? We would answer, “to save us from our sins”; and that would be correct. But what exactly does that mean, “save us from our sins”? It does mean Forgiveness, that is true; but it means much more! Here, Paul shows us exactly what that means; “To Deliver us”! From what? From “This Present Evil World”! According to Paul, being saved entails a Rescuing, a Deliverance, a Separation, from our World and Culture. He said this as well in Romans 12, “do not be conformed to this world”. That is “why” Jesus came; ” that he might deliver us from this present evil world”. And it is true for all those He forgives! May God give us Grace to see these Hidden Nuggets in His Word.
