Read 2 Chronicles 24-27

“Joash did what was right in the sight of the Lord all the days of Jehoiada the priest.” 2 Chronicles 24:2

King Ahaziah has died and his mother, Athalia, puts to death all the heirs to the throne; so she thinks. One son of Ahaziah has been spared, and when 7, installed to his rightful position as King. His Aunt Jehoshabeath and Uncle Jehoiada, who was High Priest at the time, raised him as their own son. And as a son we are told, “did what was right in the sight of the Lord”.

But the days would come when this godly Mentor would die and others would take the role as Counselor and Guide. They would not follow the ways of the Lord, as we are told, “They abandoned the house of the Lord, the God of their fathers, and served the Asherim and the idols”. He would soon become a Wicked King, even putting to death Zechariah, the son of his surrogate father Jehoiada. What a Sad and Tragic Story!

Much can be said in application, but suffice it to say, sometimes the best efforts of parents do not produce the children they desire. They may live good, even godly lives while under your roof, but as they move out on their own, compromise the Morals and Values you instilled in them as they grew up. May God breathe on them, and us, and give us Grace!
