Read 2 Chronicles 1-4

“Give me now wisdom and knowledge, that I may go out and come in before this people, for who can rule this great people of Yours?” 2 Chronicles 1:10

We are told at the beginning of Chapter 1, “Solomon the son of David established himself securely over his kingdom, and the LORD his God was with him and exalted him greatly” and that he gathered all the Leaders to Gibeon to seek the Lord. This included “the commanders of thousands and of hundreds and to the judges and to every leader in all Israel, the heads of the fathers’ households.” There, at Gibeon, was the Tabernacle that Moses had made and the bronze altar that Bezalel had made. Solomon would offer a 1,000 burnt offerings that day.

We then read in Verse 7 “that night God appeared to Solomon and said to him, “Ask what I shall give you.” What follows is Today’s Verse, where he answers God with his request. Notice; he did not ask for riches, wealth or honor, or the life of those who hated him, nor for long life. He asked for Wisdom and Knowledge.

We too, as the People of God, need Wisdom and Knowledge. The whole book of Proverbs has been given to us so that we can grow “wiser” and more “knowledgeable”. How foolish we would be if we did not avail ourselves of something so valuable!!! May God grant us a heart like Solomon’s!

  1. How does this fit with the believer and the many similar promises Jesus gave throughout the Gospels. This was obviously a promise in the context of promises already given to David & with God’s will clearly given to do as asked . Under the New Testament mandate it is always in the context of “If you believe” & “Thy will be done” .

    1. Not sure if I fully understand what you’re asking, but I’ll do my best and you can correct me if I’m missing it! I don’t think it does. This was a Unique Promise given to Solomon by God with a Unique Purpose. It isn’t One that we can take and apply to or for ourselves. My only reference to it was to show how Important Wisdom and Knowledge is. I hope that helps!
