“Elijah came near to all the people and said, “How long will you hesitate between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow Him; but if Baal, follow him.” But the people did not answer him a word.” 1 Kings 18:21
As we begin Chapter 17, we’re introduced to the Prophet Elijah with this Verse: “Now Elijah the Tishbite, who was of the settlers of Gilead, said to Ahab, “As the Lord, the God of Israel lives, before whom I stand, surely there shall be neither dew nor rain these years, except by my word.” What a way to begin a New Chapter! And, believe it or not, this is all we know about him.
The Story proceeds with the Drought continuing just as proclaimed, then culminates at Mount Carmel with all Israel, King Ahab, and 450 prophets of Baal present. They are all invited to a Sacrifice where they are given these instructions: “Now let them give us two oxen; and let them choose one ox for themselves and cut it up, and place it on the wood, but put no fire under it; and I will prepare the other ox and lay it on the wood, and I will not put a fire under it. Then you call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of the Lord, and the God who answers by fire, He is God.” Today’s Verse is given as Impetus in their preparation.
