Read 1 Chronicles 23-26

“And he gathered together all the leaders of Israel with the priests and the Levites.” 1 Chronicles 23:2

David has just established Solomon as Israel’s new King. Starting here at Verse 2, and for the next several Chapters, he outlines the role that the Priests and the Levites will have in the future government. It is a long list of names and various duties that can be quite mundane, but it was something that had to be done in running the kingdom.

You see, those chosen to serve were those God had originally set aside for Tabernacle Service. In the Wilderness, the Tabernacle needed to be setup, then torn down, and carried to their next location. As they entered the land of Canaan, it went through the same process, though not as frequently. Now, a fixed location has been established for the Ark, the Altar, and the Worship of God. Those needed for the Work in moving the place of Worship now had new roles provided at the Temple. They were originally a Holy People and now, though their Roles would change, would continue to be those selected to Serve God!

Isn’t that the same for us today in the Church? We have many Day to Day Duties that need done, but we don’t choose those to meet them based on “Ability”. They are those recognized and set apart to Serve God in his Temple today based on a certain criteria. Paul tells us in 1st Timothy, that it is about Character. In summarizing their qualifications he says “if they are beyond reproach”. Just like the Levites, a Holy People!
