Read 1 Chronicles 16-18

“Then David the king went in and sat before the Lord and said, “Who am I, O Lord God, and what is my house that You have brought me this far?” 1 Chronicles 17:16

One of the most famous and well known characters in the Bible is David. From his story of fighting Goliath, to his rule as King of Israel, no one is more illustrious. But in vivid contrast, consider David’s own estimation of himself in Today’s Verse; “Who am I, and what is my house that you have brought me this far”? Not what you would expect!

Let’s review what prompted this confession. In the beginning of Chapter 17 we’re told “it came about, when David dwelt in his house, that David said to Nathan the prophet, “Behold, I am dwelling in a house of cedar, but the ark of the covenant of the Lord is under curtains””. But Nathan responds “You shall not build a house for Me to dwell in” but “the Lord will build a house for you”. He then goes on to explain how God will bless Solomon, how he will build the Temple, and ultimately, how Christ will Rule on his Throne forever.

Such Humility is why David was so exalted. But we shouldn’t be surprised, for Jesus said “he who humbles himself will be exalted.” May this “Man after God’s own heart” help us to walk in humility today!
