“In that day a fountain will be opened for the house of David and for the inhabitants of Jerusalem, for sin and for impurity.” Zechariah 13:1
Of all the Prophetical Books, Zechariah is one that remains secret and mysterious. There is still so much in it that we don’t understand, and may never, until we are in Heaven. And yet this Verse stands out loud and clear. Though the Old Testament Jew would understand this literally, where he could go and physically wash himself in water, we in the New Covenant would see this figuratively.
What comes to mind each time I read this is the Hymn, “There is a Fountain”. That Fountain, we’re told, is “filled with Blood, drawn from Immanuel’s Veins”. And for us as Sinners, we can be cleansed from all our “guilty stains”, not only in body, but also in conscience, which no water-filled fountain could do. What a Glorious means God has provided us for daily cleansing! May each of us seek for that Fountain today and find Fresh Forgiveness from our Great God!
