Read Psalm 51-55

“And do not take Your Holy Spirit from me.” Psalm 51:11b

Each year as I go through the Psalms, this is one that I love coming to and linger long on. As most of you know, this is the Song that David composed after his Adultery with Bathsheba and his Murder of Uriah. It is the model for Christians today of what it means to be broken and contrite before God.

In Today’s Verse, David pleads with God not to take the Holy Spirit away from him. He had seen firsthand with King Saul what that could mean. Though as Christians, God does not remove His Spirit from us “savingly”, we can still “grieve the Spirit” and lose His Presence. And without Him, as Jesus has told us, “We Can Do Nothing”! How we live, how we speak, and how we think, are ALL part of enjoying God’s Presence. May David’s prayer today become ours!
