“Now there was a famine in the days of David for three years,” 2 Samuel 21:1a
Every year I read through the Bible, I come across Sections, or even a whole Chapter, that is still a mystery to me. Chapter 21 of 2nd Samuel is one of them. Today’s Verse is how the Chapter starts. There is a 3 year famine, David seeks God to find out why, and then we read “It is for Saul and his bloody house, because he put the Gibeonites to death”. The Story declines from there with further instruction of “why”, and then how God is ultimately satisfied. You’ll need to read the Chapter yourself to get the Whole Picture.
As I have said before, I have read through the Bible many times; at this writing, more than 45. And yet, each time I read this Chapter, it still baffles me! I have no answer. So…, rather than attempt an explanation, let me provide you another Verse that helps me when Stories like these pop up. Deuteronomy 29:29 says “The secret things belong to the Lord our God”. This is my “Go To” Verse whenever I reach an Impasse in my understanding. They Are Secret! They Belong To God! And I’m not alone; even Peter says of Paul’s writings, “in which are some things hard to understand“.
So, what is our resolve? We must believe that “the Lord of all the earth will do right”, and then just wait until we reach Glory for further illumination. Nevertheless brethren, let us press on!
