“Then Gideon said to him, “O my lord, if the Lord is with us, why then has all this happened to us?”” Judges 6:13a
So far in Judges, we’ve seen the Low and High Tides of Israel’s Faith. At Low Tide, Israel becomes Idolatrous, an Enemy conquers and takes over, and then Israel suffers under their Rule! At High tide, Israel cries out to God, He sends them a Judge to deliver them, and they remain Faithful to God during that Judge’s lifetime. Then that “cycle” repeats until the end of the Book.
Judges 6-8 is the story of Gideon. As the Angel of the Lord meets him, He declares “the Lord is with you, O valiant warrior”. In Today’s Verse we have Gideon’s reply. This reveals a tragic flaw in Gideon’s World View! Why? How about the Altar of Baal and the Asherah that belongs to your father? That the people of your city want to kill you when God has you tear it down? Why not start there? As I’ve said in the past, Judges is a Very Sad Book. It reveals how far the People of God can fall into Sin and yet “Have No Clue”.
Tragically, today’s Church is sliding into the same Sorry State! May God open our eyes and show us today’s Baals and Asherahs in our midst. We need Gideons today willing to tear them down!!!
